CHAPTER 10

STRANDED

Douglas was in excruciating pain after his wound to the upper arm thanks to the bullet from Sam’s pistol. He was also dealing with the psychological impact of running from the thugs of New York, Henry Johnson’s men. He found himself at the home of Mrs. Linkle, the wife of the man who got shot right in front of Douglas at the warehouse at the hands of Sam. It was just after the shootout he had just had with Sam on the dusty streets of New York City, and Douglas was losing blood in a hurry. What could he do? He wondered to himself. He felt trapped, alone, abandoned, none of his old acquaintances from New York would help him, and this woman, Mrs. Linkle, was the only person he could turn to. It was just a coincidence that she just happened to belong to the man in whom Douglas watched die right in front of the very thugs he was running from. But, oh how he needed Haley right now. He remembered that special night in his old broken down New York City apartment. The night in which she had the guts to take care of a girl she hardly knew, a girl who couldn’t even take care of herself. But that’s how much Haley loved Douglas, and now she loved Alexa just as much.

“I usually don’t invite strangers into my house,” Mrs. Linkle said to Douglas after Douglas was able to sneak his way into her home by telling Mrs. Linkle that he was at her husband’s side the moment he died. “Especially someone who is a bloody mess,” she continued. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Linkle, but I.” No sooner had Douglas gotten those words out of his mouth than he went crashing onto the floor. He had passed out due to the blood loss, and there was Mrs. Linkle, left there to deal with a man she didn’t even know.

“Oh my goodness!” Mrs. Linkle shouted out. “Son, son, wake up, please,” Mrs. Linkle begged Douglas as she knelt down and started slapping him across the cheek. It was to no avail, Douglas was out cold. “You’re skin is pale blue,” Mrs. Linkle noted after staring at Douglas’ face for a few seconds. “I have no choice, I must get Doctor Barnes or this poor boy could die right here in my very living room,” Mrs. Linkle said.

Mrs. Linkle hurriedly put on a coat and headed toward the streets of New York City. “Where is everyone?” She thought to herself as she made her way down the dusty streets. She made her way into the pharmacy, the same pharmacy that Douglas found himself in after the shooting, the same place where he had to beg for someone, anyone, to help him locate Mrs. Linkle. The same crowd that Douglas encountered was still huddled up together at the same time Mrs. Linkle entered the store.

“Doctor Barnes, guys, have you seen him?” Mrs. Linkle asked the crowd. “Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost or something,” Mrs.
